College student outreach

Overview

College Student Outreach builds student-led transit advocacy chapters at UNLV, CSN, and Nevada State. The chapters give students a local civic home for transit, housing, street safety, and land-use work.

Students are not only future voters. Many are already navigating the Valley without reliable transportation, balancing classes, work, family, and long commutes.

Motivation

College students are some of the Valley’s most transit-dependent residents, and they will live with the consequences of today’s transportation choices for decades. A durable transit movement needs them as organizers, communicators, witnesses, and future civic leaders.

Without campus chapters, interested students have no easy way to find each other, learn the issue, or plug into public meetings and campaigns.

Approach

LVBT will start through student government, student newspapers, public-policy clubs, urban-studies groups, and sympathetic faculty. Campus events can introduce the issue while also identifying the students who want to organize.

Chapters will receive basic training in organizing, communications, and policy. Where possible, LVBT will pursue grant funding to support student stipends and student-led projects.

Activities

LVBT will help launch campus chapters with student leads, faculty advisors, meeting rhythms, and a clear connection to active campaigns. A working chapter can run a table, host a teach-in, recruit for a hearing, and publish student-facing transit content without waiting for the main organization to do everything.

The work also builds a pipeline into the Vegas Transit Youth Corps, Transit Diaries, walking tours, public comments, and campaign volunteering, so student interest becomes visible civic work rather than a loose contact list.
