State legislator outreach

Build the relationships in Carson City needed to win dedicated RTC funding in the 2027 session.

Why this project

Nevada’s legislature meets every two years. The 2027 session begins in February 2027, the last one before RTC’s 2028 service cuts hit. Walking into that session without pre-existing relationships, prepared testimony, and identified champions is how you lose. We won’t lose by being unprepared.

Approach

  • Early relationship-building meetings, well before the session
  • District visits with legislators in transit-dependent areas (Assembly Districts 11, 12, 13, 28, 35, 41, 42)
  • Briefings that connect transit to what each district lives with — tourism, workforce, climate, equity
  • Coordination with organized labor and existing transportation advocacy at the state level

Goals

  • In progress

Map both chambers and identify prospective transit champions

    Target Sep 2026

  • Planned

Brief at least one champion in each chamber by end of 2026

    Target Dec 2026

  • Planned

Develop and circulate a one-page transit funding ask to all members of the Senate Committee on Revenue and Economic Development and the Assembly Committee on Revenue

    Target Dec 2026

  • Planned

Coordinate with allied organizations (Culinary, Sierra Club, Nevada Conservation League) on shared asks

    Target Jan 2027

  • Planned

Prepare written and oral testimony for the relevant 2027 hearings

    Target Apr 2027
